The latest of many changes in its history is the only one that hasn’t altered the course of the Mississippi. Donald Trump recently renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America: the river has taken this in its deep, wide, long stride.

Slavery, cotton, sugar, and the Mississippi – they made the American South prosper.
